This 1,450-foot gravel driveway in Peebles, Ohio needed much more than another layer of stone.
Multiple sections of the existing driveway had developed ruts and low areas, while surrounding grades were creating drainage problems in several locations. Before resurfacing the driveway, the existing material needed to be reshaped and the problem areas corrected so surface water had a better path away from the driving surface.
The finished project included driveway grading and reshaping, drainage improvements, bank corrections, new #411 stone, final grading and compaction.

Before the Work Began
The existing driveway stretched approximately 1,450 feet through the property and included several hills, curves and changing grades.
Before new stone was added, the driveway needed attention in several areas. Existing material had moved, ruts and low areas had developed, and portions of the surrounding grade were preventing water from properly leaving the driveway.
Three high-bank areas, approximately 75 feet, 50 feet and 25 feet long, were identified for correction so water would no longer be trapped along those portions of the drive.
Grading & Drainage Corrections
The first phase focused on the existing driveway.
Material was pulled back in from the edges, rutted areas were smoothed, and crown was reestablished where needed. Several water runoffs were cut into appropriate locations to help surface water leave the driveway instead of continuing along the travel surface.
The high-bank areas were lowered and reshaped, and the project also included extending the pad area in front of the barn.
This work was completed before the final stone was graded into place, because the goal wasn't simply to cover the existing problems with fresh gravel.
New #411 Stone & Final Grading
Once the initial grading and drainage work was completed, the driveway was ready for new material.
The project called for approximately 166 tons of #411 stone, calculated to provide roughly a two-inch layer while also supplying material needed to bring low and rutted areas back to grade. The stone was supplied and delivered by the customer's chosen provider and tailgated along the driveway.
After delivery, the new stone was graded across the driveway, ridges were smoothed, low areas were filled, and the material was blended into the corrected grades and drainage layout. Final compaction completed the driveway and extended barn-pad area.
The Finished Peebles Driveway
The finished driveway shows what can happen when grading, drainage and new stone are treated as parts of the same project.
Instead of simply spreading gravel over the existing surface, this project started by addressing the shape of the driveway and the areas where water was having difficulty getting away.
Then the fresh #411 provided the finished driving surface.
And at 1,450 feet long, there's plenty of finished driveway to see. LOL.
